BIOGRAPHY

Joel Silverstein was born in Brooklyn NY in 1957 and attended Pratt Institute BFA in Painting,1979, MPS in Art Therapy and Creativity Development in 1982, and Brooklyn College MFA in Painting 1992.

He is an artist/curator who paints postmodern expressionist landscapes, portraits, and interior scenes often with Jewish themes. The artist/ curator is a Founding and Executive Member of the Jewish Art Salon (2008-present), and is currently Director of Exhibitions, a post he holds with Richard McBee. He has curated or advised on 16 Salon exhibitions, including Genesis: the Beginning of Creativity, at The Interchurch Center, Riverside Church and The Jewish Theological Seminary, NY, Through Compassionate Eyes: Artists Call for Animal Rights at the Charter Oak Center, The Dura Europos Project at The Philadelphia Museum of Jewish Art, chosen by Council of American Jewish Museums in 2011, POW!!! for Jewish Comic Con, NY, Convivio for Repair the World, NY. Exhibitions of his own work include The HUC Heller Museum, NY, the Rabbi Ario S. and Tess Hyams Judaica Museum, Roslyn Hts., NY, The Derfner Museum, NY, Columbia/Barnard Kraft Center, NY, Art Basel, Miami with JADA, the Amstelkirk Gallery in Holland, The Mishkan Le'Omanut Museum in Israel and the Jerusalem Biennale, 2015 & 2017 His work and curated exhibitions are cited in Ori Z. Their son, Jacob, is a toy designer living in Los Angeles.
